Industrial Design

Master of Science (two years) - 120 ECTS in Product Development, specialisation Industrial Design

This Master of Science programme is given within the Dept. of
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING at the School of Engineering.

This Master’s programme provides the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and creativity within the area of industrial design. You will learn more about the whole design process from a human point of view, with a focus on usability, ergonomics, aesthetics, materials and production, as well as drafting techniques and visualisation.

The courses has an interdisciplinary approach and is guided by the relationship between humans and products. The programme provides students the opportunity to use a variety of tools to quickly visualize ideas and concepts in order to develop their creativity in the design studio and through model workshops. Students also learn to formulate and present ideas and solutions and identify new products and opportunities. A considerable part of this Master’s programme is run in project form, implementing sharp projects in collaboration with a company.

The Master's programme with the specialisation in Industrial Design at JTH is made up of two tracks, each of them running during two semesters/one year. The first year you study the track "The Man and the Product" and you will learn more about design communications, business and ergonomics. The second year's track is called "The Company and the Environment", and you will then focus on sharp projects within the area of industrial design.

On completion of the degree, you will be well prepared for work on industrial design projects, or as a consultant. If you are interested in a career in research contexts, the programme also provides a firm foundation for future research work.

The School of Engineering, Jönköping University, is a member of the prestigious collaborative between leading engineering schools worldwide - the CDIO Initiative™. There is a very restricted number of seats open to international students to the Master's programme in Product Development, specialisation Industrial Design. The selection of candidates is based on the following (beside the general pre-requisites):

  • Only students who have applied to this programme as "Priority 1" on www.studera.nu will be processed.
  • Priority is given to international students who belong to one of the partner universities of the School of Engineering.
  • Beside the application, all students must send an assignment according to a specific task (see below).

Application Assignment
The bike is a useful and environmentally friendly way to use for shorter transports. The problem, however, is its limitations to include passengers, bags, shopping bags, etc. Your task is to show how to make a practical and innovative way of making the bike more usable for transportation of people/goods. Examples of problems we would like you to work with are:
- To and from work/school
- From the supermarket
- Pick-up children from kindergarten

Think about the target groups, parents, grandparents, nursery staff, students and others. Present your ideas with sketches of max 2xA3 pages plus an explanatory text. Surprise us with new creative ideas that are both more practical and aesthetically. We also want you to write an explanation why you want to get admission to this program.

This Application Assignment must only be sent directly to:
